How to Use Instagram Reel Templates (Even When the “Use Template” Button Isn’t There)

Have you ever been scrolling Instagram, spotted a Reel you love, and thought:
“That would be perfect for my content… if only I could use it as a template.”

You’re not alone. Reel templates are one of the quickest ways to create engaging content without starting from scratch — especially if you’re short on time or not feeling particularly creative that day.

Normally, Instagram makes this easy. When you’re watching a Reel in full screen, you can tap the three dots and select “Use template”. Simple.

But what happens when:

  • The “Use template” option isn’t there?
  • The button should be there… but it’s not working?
  • You know the Reel is editable, but Instagram just isn’t playing ball?

The good news? There is a workaround — and once you know it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t use it sooner.

The Simple Workaround: Save Reels as Templates

This method works even when the “Use template” option is missing, and it’s a great habit to get into if you regularly create Reels.

1. Save the Reel

When you find a Reel you’d like to reuse:

  • Tap the save (bookmark) icon
  • Save it to a new collection on your Instagram account

💡 Top tip:
Create a dedicated folder just for this. I personally use one called “Reel templates”, so everything is in one place and easy to find later.

2. Open a New Reel

Next:

  • Tap the + icon (top left of your Instagram app)
  • Select “Reel”

This takes you into the Reel creation screen, ready to build something new.

3. Go to Templates → Saved

From the Reel creation screen:

  • Tap Templates
  • Then choose Saved

Your most recently saved Reel will appear there — and yes, you can now use it as a template 🎉

Why This Is So Useful

This workaround is a game-changer if you:

  • Batch content in advance
  • Save inspiration as you scroll
  • Want to stay on trend without copying blindly
  • Prefer having a go-to library of Reel formats that work for your brand

It also means you’re not relying on Instagram behaving perfectly (because… let’s be honest 😅).

Final Tip: Build a Reel Template Library

If you create content regularly, I highly recommend:

  • Saving Reels consistently
  • Organising them into collections (hooks, trends, talking head, b-roll, etc.)
  • Revisiting them when content feels hard or time is tight

A strong template + your own message = content that feels you, without the overwhelm.

If you’d like help spotting great Reel formats for your niche — or turning trends into content that actually fits your brand — that’s exactly the kind of thing I help with.

Happy creating ✨
